North Bay Real Estate Wanderings…Chinatown, San Francisco
September 20th, 2007
How did we end up here? The Giants lose, the hotdogs weren’t anything to write home about and we’re still hungry…Chinatown sound like a good idea? So Robert (that would be my Dad) and I end up on Grant and take a walk. Chinatown has an eerie yet safe quiet at night: the street sweepers, bakeries with their “moon cakes”, and echos of private parties and traditional music featuring bells and the shimasen.
Oh, and then this cool Coca-Cola sign!

Fire Escapes! That’s what the Basin Street development on Petaluma Blvd. is missing! They function as a balcony, BBQ deck, Mardi-Gras bead turret, and, last but not least, a fire escape. Other wanderings…
The Buddha Bar:

Ask for the “Chinese Tequila”…I have no idea what it is but it will likely churn your stomach. You can thank Javier Valenzuela of Blue Oak Mortgage for discovering that drink.
Li-Po Bar and Lounge:

Walking around in here was like a bad scene from “Lost in Translation”. Walk past a small bar and seating area down two flights of stairs to a small, dark, musty basement full of cigarette smoke, grungy punk rockers, and a loud, angry, dirty version of the Ramones. About 30 seconds of entertainment was all we needed.
Final conclusion…While there was certainly life past 10PM, a common complaint of Petaluma, our little town looked pretty quaint when we pulled in around 12am. Fire Escapes and Coca-Cola signs…take note Basin Street, guaranteed, they’ll pay off in the long haul!
